Why pet travel needs a checklist

International pet travel is not paperwork — it is a sequence with hard deadlines. The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccine. The rabies vaccine must wait its country-specific maturation period before the titer blood draw counts. The vet's certificate must be signed within 10 days of travel. The USDA APHIS endorsement must arrive before departure. Miss one step and the entire trip can be delayed by months — especially Japan and Australia, which both enforce 180-day titer waits.

This tool reproduces the canonical sequence for six common destinations. Petport on iPhone adds deadline reminders, vet appointment templates, and a destination expansion to additional countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are airline policies covered?

No. Airline pet policies (carrier size, breed restrictions, cargo vs cabin) are separate from country import rules. Confirm with the airline once you know the country procedure timing.

What about service animals or emotional support animals?

Country rules apply to the pet either way. Airlines treat service dogs differently under the ACAA, but the destination's microchip and rabies requirements still apply.

Do I need a pet passport?

Not for US-origin pets entering the EU/UK. Use the EU Animal Health Certificate (Annex IV / GB Health Certificate) instead, signed by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by USDA APHIS.

How current is this information?

As of early 2026. Pet import rules change — verify with the destination's official portal (DEFRA, MAFF, etc.) and USDA APHIS Pet Travel before booking.
